KOLKATA: West Bengal government is trying to develop silk sarees for marriage purpose as an alternative to Benarasi sarees - one of the the finest wedding-wear for the brides across the nation. The saree is being developed by experts working under the government's MSME and textile department. "I have confirmation from the chief minister to go ahead with this project. She has instructed us to finish the research work and commence the production as soon as possible," said Swapan Debnath, minister of state for MSME and textile.

"The sarees that we will manufacture will be modern and gorgeous. The elegant look, stunning hand-made designs, colours would beat its competitors in wedding saree segment," said the minister. The Silk Marriage saree will be showcased in 22 Tantuja showrooms across the state. "We are going to start production at two destinations – Dhatrigram of Burdwan and Fulia of Nadia," the minister said.

The state government has hired some expert Benarasi artists, who are presently giving training, teaching and guidance to the Bengal weavers. The promotion and branding and marketing of the saree would be done in a planned way.
